Troubleshooting & Repair

Something is not working and nobody can tell you why. I find the cause and fix that.

What you get

A proper search for the cause

I trace the circuit to find where it fails, instead of guessing at the symptom.

The repair done properly

Fixed with good parts so it stays fixed.

A check that nothing else is wrong

Once it is repaired I check the rest of that circuit. No callback for the thing sitting next to it.

A bathroom exhaust fan that had stopped working, pulled out and replaced so it runs properly again.

What I get called for

Dead outlets along one wall. A breaker that trips when the microwave and toaster run together. Lights that dim when the heat kicks in. A burning smell nobody can find. Half the basement out after a storm.

Different symptoms, same approach. Find what is wrong, then fix that.

Why I don't guess

Swapping a part because it might be the problem is how people pay three times for one repair.

I trace the circuit, find where it fails, and tell you what it is and what it costs before I touch it.

Sometimes the answer is a seventy dollar part. Sometimes it is a panel that should have gone years ago. I tell you which one you have, including when it is the cheap one.

What I won't do

I do not chase a symptom, call it fixed, and leave the cause in your wall.

And I do not leave something dangerous switched on because it was not what you called about. If I find it, I show you and tell you what the fix takes.

Common questions

Do you do emergency calls?

No. I work Tuesday to Friday, 5:00 AM to 4:00 PM. For an emergency, call someone who runs a 24-hour service. That is a straight answer, not a brush-off.

How do you charge for finding the fault?

Flat rate, quoted before I start, same as everything else. You know the number before I open anything up.

What if you can't find it?

Rare, but it happens with faults that come and go. I tell you what I have ruled out and what it takes to keep going, instead of billing you to keep poking.

My breaker keeps tripping. Can I just fit a bigger one?

No. The breaker protects the wire behind it. A bigger one just lets the wire get hot. The tripping is the safety system working. Something else is wrong.

You found something the last electrician missed. Now what?

I show you what it is, explain how it got there, and quote the fix. No lecture about the last guy.

Why most people dread hiring an electrician

Everyone has a story about a contractor. Here's what usually goes wrong, and what I do instead.

What usually happensWhat I do

They show up late (or not at all).

I show up on time.

They buy cheap materials.

I buy materials built to last.

They cut corners.

I think things through.

They leave a mess.

I clean up after myself.

They might be underinsured or unlicensed.

I carry proper insurance and licensing.

They may have a criminal history.

I'm background checked.

They charge by the hour, so you don't know what you'll actually pay.

I quote a flat price, and I stick to it.

They send whoever's available - often an apprentice.

I do every job myself.

They sell you as much as they can, even if you don't need it.

I'll tell you what you actually need.

They vanish when something fails.

I guarantee my work for life. Parts get two years.

They leave the permit to you.

I handle the permit and the inspection, so you don't have to.

I take pride in doing it right, the first time.
