There are two ways to do this and they suit different people. I'll walk you through both before you spend anything on a generator.

Two ways to do it
A portable generator hookup is the cheaper option. You already own a generator, or you buy one for a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars. When the power goes out you roll it out, plug it in, and flip a few breakers. It'll run a furnace, a fridge, and the circuits that matter.
A permanent standby generator sits outside like an air conditioner and starts itself. You don't have to be home, you don't have to go outside in a storm, and there's no fuel to carry. It costs considerably more.
Most people are better served by the portable hookup than they expect. I'll tell you honestly which one fits how you actually live, not which one costs more.
Portable generator hookup
You get an outdoor plug mounted on the house, a safety switch on your panel, the breaker, and all the wiring between them. A heavy-duty cord is included at no extra cost.
The safety switch is a simple metal slide. It makes it physically impossible to have the power company's electricity and your generator's on at the same time — which is the thing that protects the people working on the lines when a generator is wired wrong.
It's cheaper than the alternative and it lets you power any circuit in the panel rather than a fixed handful. The trade-off is that you flip the breakers by hand. That's exactly why I color-code and label them, so you're not reading a schedule by flashlight.
Permanent standby generator
A standby unit runs on natural gas or propane, so there's no fuel to store and nothing to carry outside. It watches the power, starts on its own when the grid drops, and shuts down when it comes back.
I handle the installation from the quote to the final test. Sizing matters more here than on a portable setup, because the unit is chosen for the circuits it has to carry — get it wrong and you've spent a lot of money on something that trips under load.

What's included in a portable hookup?

Can you install a whole-home standby generator?
Yes. Portable hookups and permanent standby units are both work I do start to finish.
Which one should I get?
Depends on how often your power goes out, whether you're home when it does, and what you need running. I'll give you a straight recommendation before you buy anything, including when the cheaper option is the right one.
Will it work with my panel?
Most panels have an interlock kit available, and Square D and Siemens almost always do. I'll confirm yours before quoting.
How long does it take?
A portable hookup is usually one visit. A standby installation takes longer and I'll give you the schedule at the quote.
Do I need a permit?
That's up to your town and I check for your address. Where one is required, I pull it and meet the inspector — it's in the price.
