Two ways to do it
A portable generator hookup costs less. You use a generator you own, or buy one for a few hundred to a couple of thousand. When the power drops you roll it out, plug it in, and flip a few breakers. It runs a furnace, a fridge, and the circuits that matter.
A permanent standby generator sits outside like an air conditioner and starts itself. It runs whether you are home or not. No storm to walk into, no fuel to carry. It costs a lot more.
The portable hookup suits more people than expect it. I tell you which one fits how you live, not which one costs more.
Portable generator hookup
You get an outdoor plug on the house, a safety switch on your panel, the breaker, and the wiring between them. A heavy-duty cord comes with it.
The safety switch is a metal slide. It makes it impossible to run the power company's electricity and your generator at once. That is what protects the crews working on the lines.
It costs less and it reaches any circuit in the panel, not a fixed handful. The trade is that you flip the breakers by hand. That is why I color-code and label them. You are not reading a schedule by flashlight.
Permanent standby generator
A standby unit runs on natural gas or propane. Nothing to store, nothing to carry outside. It watches the power, starts itself when the grid drops, and shuts down when it returns.
I handle it from the quote to the final test. Sizing matters more here than on a portable setup. The unit gets picked for the circuits it carries. Get that wrong and you have spent a lot on something that trips under load.

Can you install a whole-home standby generator?
Yes. I do portable hookups and permanent standby units start to finish.
Which one should I get?
It depends on how often your power drops, whether you are home when it does, and what you need running. You get a straight recommendation before you buy, including when the cheaper option wins.
Will it work with my panel?
Most panels have an interlock kit available. Square D and Siemens almost always do. I confirm yours before I quote.
How long does it take?
A portable hookup is usually one visit. A standby install takes longer. You get the schedule at the quote.
Do I need a permit?
That is up to your town. I check for your address. Where one is required I pull it and coordinate the inspection.
